The German Shorthaired Pointer developed in the last century in Germany as an all around hunting dog and companion.  Breed development continued into this century by combining characteristics from other breeds.  The first known German Shorthairs were imported into the U.S. in the 1920s.  The breed remains today as a versatile hunting dog--one dog for many purposes--and as a household companion.  They are family dogs with an active but sound disposition, love to be petted and to be close to their owners.   They enjoy children if they grow up with them, and are highly intelligent.   They will hunt anything and need to use that hunting instinct in structured activity.
